World’s Best Kept Secret
by: Adya Sukhija
Coming straight from a mother to her daughter,
It started with the idea of blood being thicker than water
Behold! For now, you’ll finally get to know it,
Passed on from one generation to the next, it’s the world’s best kept secret-
“Young lady, remember only the brave can bleed,
But see how the bounds of this secret will set you to breathe
The irony, indeed that you’re laughing at,
Shall one day be your armour in combat
Months will follow one after the other,
But you’ll remember to hush it around your younger brother
I know that you’ll accept it with pride,
Even being aware of the pain that you’ll have to hide!
These words of wisdom,
shall run your kingdom
So, hear it with immediacy for you’ll now have to keep track,
I know, one day there’ll be no looking back,
Yet you’ll remember where you started from,
All held together by that societal norm!
You’re old enough to bleed and breed,
But they’re far too young to get this feed
You’ll even want to scream in pain,
Because of all those cramps and strain,
But first young lady, you’ll have to hide that stain,
Remember, it’s all a part of your reign!
Now, don’t ever feel alone,
For these words have already been set in stone
They might try to separate us by shame,
But we shall always reunite in good fame
So, surreptitiously bleed and breathe, young lady
I still can’t understand why they think it’s shady
But one day, you might do
For now, without further ado
I want you to scream it out loud and clear,
Without a single trace of doubt or fear
I know, for certain, they all will understand it soon,
But until then, this secret shall not get out of this room!”
